Do you need a Bravia with MotionFlow?
One of the big problems with flat screen TVs is dealing with FAST moving scenes. While this wasn't an issue with the chunky old CRT style TVs, LCD TVs have always had problems with fast moving images. During sports or fast movie action scenes, problems like blur and other noticible distortion can occur.
Newer versions of Sony TVs have a built in technology called Motionflow. (Other TV makers have their own version of this technology, under a different name). It works by inserting extra 'frames' into the video you are watching to make motion appear smoother. Whatever you're watching - Blu-ray, DVD, TV - you're actually seeing a series of still images shown very quickly, one after the other. By inserting extra frames, Motionflow can drastically smooth out and improve video quality.
A Sony Bravia with 200Hz Motionflow technology will show an impressive 4 times as many frames as a standard 50Hz television. This means that if you're watching the football, or Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray, you'll get far sharper, better quality images. Motionflow doesn't just insert the same identical frames between normal frames (as some other TVs do), it intellifently creates new frames that enhance the quality of motion noticibly.
As well as the job of inserting new frames, Motionflow does something else very clever. It 'cleans up' images before showing them to you on screen. And if you're wondering how you know which Bravias have this technology, the Z5500 series of Bravia TVs all have Motionflow 200Hz technology as standard in them.
Drawbacks to Motionflow technology
While reception and reviews from magazines such as What Hi-Fi? of Bravia TVs with Motionflow technology have been extremely favourable, it does come at a price. You can expect to pay a lot more for a new Bravia TV with the latest Motionflow 200Hz. For example, a standard 46" Bravia will cost around £500 more with Motionflow 200Hz. As a buyer, this is a decision you will have to make.
It is however worth noting that older Bravias won't look AWFUL without this technology. The Bravia range have always had a reputation for extremely good handling of motion. But you will get a noticible increase in quality on the Z5500 series of TVs.
Motionflow will no doubt continue to advance and increase as Sony compete with other TV makers to iron out the problems inherent with LCD TV technology. If you don't mind paying a little extra and you are planning to watch a lot of sports, then certainly consider investing in a TV with Motionflow.
