Sony Models Explained
If you're looking to buy a Sony Bravia TV, you'll notice that there are not only many different screen sizes (for example 22", 46"), but there are also many different model types. For example, for the 37" Bravia, you'll find there are several in this size to choose from: 37S5500, 37V5500 and 37W550, to name but a few!
What do the letters mean?
TV Manufacturers are constantly competing with other TV makers to update and improve their technology - to get an edge. And as LCD TVs are based heavily on technology, newer screens, comonents and technoloies are released on an ongoing basis that improve TVs. Today's budget TVs would have been top spec models as little as 6 months ago.
Different letters and numbers appear in the Bravia model name after the screen size. The model is normally broken down as screen size, then a letter, then a number. Far from being a marketing exercise, the new technology used in different models can have a drastic effect on your new TVs performance, whether you're buying an LCD, a Plasma or an LED.
What kinds of differences should buyers look out for?
The different models are often referred to as 'series'. For example the KDL-26L5000 will could be said to be part of the 'L5000 Series'. Each series offers something slightly different. But the features you get from say a 26" Sony 26L500 will also be found on a 32L5000. So each series has common features, regardless of the panel size.
Price will also vary greatly between model lines.
What changes from one Series to the next?
Here's some things that typically differ from one Bravia series to the next that you need to be aware of as a buyer.
- Number of HDMI Ports
- Power saving capabilities
- Whether the set is 24p (full HD)
- Which version of the Bravia Engine is offered
- Whether or not the set has MotionFlow
- If Bravia Sync is used
